Toypography — A toy of typography.Typography_toy

Toypography blocks are a child’s toy that will spell words
in either English or Japanese. The English words are formed using letter
fragments which can be snapped apart and re-formed into Japanese characters of
the same meaning, and vice-versa. Cool.  From Kokuyo, in Japan.

How do you see the future?

Sep 25, 2007   //   by Stephen Samuel   //   Creativity, Design, Fun Stuff  //  No Comments

Antimotion + Floating Gat are calling for artists to submit
works for their FUTR WRLD competition. Submit your vision of the future.

“FUTR WRLD is an open source collaborative effort among
artists to create a conceptual rendering of earth and its inhabitants in the
year 2060. The environment of the planet will change in the next 50 years. How
will humans incorporate and change through the use of technology and untapped
natural resources. How will modern day society be affected by these changes.
What will be the outcome in cities and small villages around the globe. Will we
have to place trust in machines. Will technology be a positive forward motion
or a hindering step back. We are asking that artists from all over the world
participate.”

Submission deadline is October 31, 2007.

For information and submission details visit: www.anti-motion.com, CORE 77, or boing boing.

If you would like feedback on an idea, Core77 has set up a FUTR WRLD bulletin board
for discussion.

Leaving a smaller footprint?

Sep 20, 2007   //   by Stephen Samuel   //   Design, Engineers, Materials  //  No Comments

More and more, people are talking about being green, leaving a smaller footprint.
Here’s an interesting article relating to this subject, from Machine Design, published August 23, 2007.

Treading lightly

The pressure is on for designers to pick materials that will
leave little to no environmental footprint at the end of a product’s useful
life.

Product designers have historically focused on performance and how much it
will cost to mold parts when spec’ing engineering resins. With FEA and CAE
software, it’s easy to narrow the field of options based on mechanical,
thermal, and physical performance. But these tools won’t tell designers about
the environmental footprint the various resins (including fillers, additives,
and reinforcements) leave at the end of a widget’s useful life.
