Would FEA have saved the I-35 bridge?
The I-35W Mississippi River Bridge, an eight-lane, 1,907-ft-long structure in downtown Minneapolis, collapsed in August of last
year killing 13 people and injuring at least 100 more. Analysts are using modern FEA and other techniques to determine why the 40-year-old bridge failed.
An article, "Would FEA Have Saved The I-35 Bridge? Federal investigators recently released a few preliminary
findings about the infamous Minnesota I-35W bridge failure.", published in Machine Design on March 6, 2008, explores this idea. Interestingly, the news of the bridge collapse came as attendees arrived at SolidWorks World. Many FEA experts were among the FEA and CAD vendors there. The consensus? "Had FEA been around when the
bridge was built, it would have caught the errors that seem to have led to the
bridge’s collapse."

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that we, as experts in FEA, can perform FEA, sell NX Nastran, and train in FEA. Also, look for our new FEA manual, coming this spring!
